Ida Sue Jackson

Ida Sue Jackson, age 80, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at the Brandywine Living of Longwood at Kennett Square.  She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Brinton W. & Edna W. "Ted" Walton Jackson.

Sue graduated from Octorara High School class of 1961 and furthered her education with a BA from Lycoming College; Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Texas; and a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College.

She joined the faculty at Bloomsburg University as a Professor in the Sociology and Anthropology Department in 1973 and taught at the university for 31 years and served as Department Chair for several years.  Sue commuted weekly to Bryn Mawr while teaching to attend doctoral courses.

A people person, Sue loved get togethers with her many friends and family.  She was an advocate for the less fortunate and devoted a lot of time and effort to the causes she felt she could make a difference in some way.  After high school, she joined the Peace Corps and worked in urban and rural communities in Lima Peru for two years.  While working towards her masters degree, she was a Social Worker Consultant and helped create the Grayson County Human Service Council.  While teaching she was on  the board of directors at the Bloomsburg Day Care and president of the Columbia Day Care; co-president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was awarded AAUW Woman of the year.

Sue traveled extensively with friends and family during summer breaks and after retiring.  She often had her family to her home on weekends and saw to it that they were well entertained.   She enjoyed the Philadelphia Phillies, and 76ers, and loved cats as she owned many over the years.  She was an avid reader and loved playing cards games like bridge and pinochle.

Sue is survived by her sister Mary Ann "Pink" Jackson of Kennett Square, nephew Brinton D. Jackson of Abu Dhabi, niece Beth A. McSherry of Lebanon and a great nephew Callen Carter McSherry.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin brother Otley W. Jackson.

A graveside service will take place at Sadsbury Friends Burial Grounds, 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap, PA, on Saturday, September 21st at 11 a.m.
