Obituary

William Rogers Fieles passed away at home Sunday June 8, after a years long struggle with Alzheimer's at the age of 91. Born to William M. R. Fieles and Ida Coates Fieles on May 15, 1934 in the house on the corner (102) of Germantown and High Streets in Christiana, he lived his entire life on the property in Christiana. Having attended Octorara Schools through 9th grade he graduated from Coatesville High School and then attended and graduated from West Chester State Teachers College in West Chester, PA. with a degree in Social Studies.  Here he met his wife Carolyn McCoy of Upper Darby, PA which were married in June 1956. She passed away in January of 2020.

He was immediately hired to teach History at the newly completed Octorara High School on the top of the hill above Atglen finally retiring after 25 years in 1985.  They had two sons, Bill born in February 1959 still living on the farm in Christiana, and Bob born in December 1960 who died of a heart attack in January 2009. Baseball was involved in his whole life (following his father) beginning as a child in Christiana, then with Octorara and Coatesville becoming one of the best hitters in the league (pre-SCCL, old ChesMont) holding a better than .500 average. He continued with the Philadelphia Athletics as a pitcher throwing batting practice and for West Chester State until he hurt his arm after which he played various positions in the Coatesville City Twilight League for many, many years. He was the initiator and first coach of the baseball program at Octorara High School. His baseball career was not over however, as he umpired for many years in both Lancaster and Chester Counties up to and including the college level.  He was an avid Beagler having several hounds and belonging to both the LANCO Sportsman's Club in Mt. Nebo, PA and The Sportsman's Club in Modena, PA. Watching the hounds trail the rabbit with as little wasted motion as possible was his passion. He took this to the fox hunting field with a long career of "riding to the hounds" as a member of the Cochran Fox Hunt from Cochranville, PA. Staying away from the field, he liked to "hilltop" where he could see the hounds work the turns that the fox would take. He had several horses, as well as raised chickens (both layers and broilers), sheep, and a few steers.

He is survived by a son William and his wife Ann of Christiana, a Grandson Brian of California and a Granddaughter, Rebecca of Oregon. As well as a grandson, Jonathan his wife Amanda of Willow Street, PA and two Great Granddaughters, Olivia and Adalyn.

A private interment will take place in the Sadsbury Friends Burial Grounds.  There will be a celebratory gathering on Saturday, July 19th from 2-4 pm. at Chantry Place, 15 N. Bridge Street, Christiana, PA.
