Obituary

Virginia (Ginnie) B. Mullin, age 89, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, shortly before her 90th birthday.  She was the wife of the late Raymond H. Long who died July 21, 1975, and the late Thomas G. Mullin who died July 30, 2013.  Born in Narvon, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Catherine Robison Baxter.

Ginnie was passionate about teaching. She graduated from Terre Hill High School in 1952 and after attending Millersville Teacher's College, received emergency certification to begin her career in education in 1953 at Union Grove, a one-room schoolhouse in East Earl township.  In 1963 she started teaching elementary school in the Solanco School District and became a district reading specialist in 1972.  After receiving her master's degree in 1976, she became a Reading Specialist and Title 1 Coordinator for Solanco.  In 1984, she received the International Reading Association Literacy Award for her work to include parents in literacy programs. After retiring in 1995, she continued to share her joy of reading with her grandchildren.

She enjoyed singing, spending many years in her church choir at Memorial United Methodist Church in Quarryville.  She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Robert Fulton Chapter.   She was the membership secretary for PSER's into her 80's and served on various committees at Woodcrest Villa after moving there.  She always enjoyed being involved with church activities and spending time with family.  Ginnie was a genuine friend to all she met, always having a smile and cheerful outlook and showing grace and love.

She was predeceased by a son Michael (Donna) of Fort Worth, TX, siblings Eileen (Rodney) Gilbert of Willow Street, and Dr. Harold (Kathy) Baxter of Rochester, MN.

She is survived by 4 children: Mitchell (Michelle) Long of Brownstown, Marshall (Cathleen) Long of Paradise, Janet Sample Kurman of Pennsville, NJ and Joyce (Stephen) Beaudet of Newark, DE: 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 siblings: Harry (Veanna) Baxter of Honey Brook, and Beth (Otmar) Renken of Columbia, SC.

Family will greet visitors beginning at 9:30 on Tuesday, October 29, followed by a memorial service at 10:30 am at the Chapel in Eagle Commons at Woodcrest Villa.  A private service will be held for internment at Conestoga Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Tandem Living benevolent care fund or Lancaster Hospice & Community Care.
