Verna Jean (nee Habecker) Pope Hoover, age 91, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away peacefully December 15, 2019 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Home in Quarryville, PA,. She was born January 22, 1928 in Hershey, PA to Sadie M. (nee Gipe) and John W. Habecker. Preceeding her in death, the first love of her life, Lloyd E. Pope whom she married in 1947.Verna found love again and exchanged vows with Roy G. Hoover in 1963, who also preceded her in death.
Prior to retirement, Verna was employed by Heim Electric Company and The Leukemia Society of Harrisburg. She gave many volunteer hours for numerous organizations throughout her active years. She was a member of the Devers Lions Club Auxillary, West Side Osteopathic Hospital Auxillary, a Red Cross Volunteer Staff Aid, and a driver for the Golden Age Club in York. She also volunteered with Girl Scouts of America for nearly a decade.
Verna shared the love of music with Roy and was a choir member and occasional soloist with the choirs of First E.U.B. Church of York, Fourth United Church of Christ in Harrisburg and U.C.C. in Penbrook, PA. She was most recently a member of the congregation of Charlton United Methodist Church of Paxtonia, PA.
With a creative and inquisitive nature, Verna loved to sew, challenge herself with increasingly difficult crossword puzzles, draw flowers and fantastical fairies, play the piano and listen to opera. In addition to sewing for her family, she shared her talents in creating costumes for numerous school productions.However, Verna was never happier than when she could spend time with her family and friends while playing cards, crafting or just sharing good food and great stories.
Verna is survived by her three children, Helen Pope Reneau (Duane)of Salem, Oregon, Lloyd (Sharon) Pope of Conestoga, PA and Barbara Hoover Kowalski (Michael) of Hershey, PA.Also surviving are her four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.The youngest of five siblings, she was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde and John, and sisters, Ruth and Helen.
Family and friends will be invited to celebrate Verna's life when all are able to gather for a memorial service to be held in her and her family's home church, the United Methodist Church on Chocolate Avenue in Hershey, PA. Verna will be interred in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra, PA among other family members.
