Sara Ellen
Lapp
January 1, 1935 – February 23, 2026
Sara Ellen Miller Lapp, age 91, of Gap, PA passed away at home on February 23, 2026, surrounded by her family after a long courageous battle with dementia. Born January 1, 1935 to the late Abraham and Fannie (Miller) Miller in Millersburg, OH. She was the loving widow of Omar James Lapp, celebrating 61 years married July 27, 1963 in Wilmot, OH. Sara was always curious and a lifelong learner. She attended Beidler's School in Holmes County, OH through the allowed 8th grade. She was determined to go to college and figured out how to get High School Credits by Exams. As soon as she was 21, able to leave home, and earn her own money, she went to work at Mennonite Publishing House. She earned her BS in Education at Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, VA, making life long friendships including finding Omar. She did this all while a member of the Old Order Amish church. Sara worked tirelessly. As a child and teen, she worked on the family farm and helped in her father's mill. She taught school in Plain City, OH until she married Omar in Wilmot, OH. They moved to Gap, PA to take care of Omar's parents as they raised their children. While raising her family, she also worked at Parkesburg Mennonite School, Summit Valley School, Christ's Home, Rhoades Market, Sandy Hill Preschool and Provident Bookstore. Sara's most endearing trait was hospitality, making space for everyone at the table and her quick wit keeping you at ease. She hosted International Students over Thanksgiving from universities in Philadelphia. She opened her home for MCC interns. She shared coffee with neighbors, friends and family, often abandoning cups maybe on a fencepost. Best of all were her delicious Sunday dinners for family, friends and visitors that always included mashed potatoes and applesauce, and treats in little mailboxes for the grandchildren. And before you go she would always say "time for popcorn!" Sara loved adventuring with Omar. They made many trips west to visit their children and relatives in Ohio to her childhood home of Winesburg. Sara was an excellent support for her family's hiking adventures, even hiking on her own down to Havasupai and providing support for many other epic hikes at the Grand Canyon, Pikes Peak, the Appalachian Trail and the Camino de Santiago in Spain. She enjoyed international travel to Canada, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, Greece, France, Germany, and Switzerland. Sara had many hobbies and past times, always ready to win a scrabble game, or checkers. She completed all the puzzles in the daily newspaper and shared daily Wordle scores with the family. An avid gardener, she grew beautiful flowers and was always excited for the seed catalogs in January. Sara had an angelic soprano voice, always humming or singing as she went about her day. She enjoyed singing with the birds, memorizing their chirps. She sang in many choirs, and assembled a classical music record collection in college with Omar. She was a member of the Old Order Amish Church in Holmes County, OH and then raised their family in Sandy Hill Mennonite and joined Ridgeview Mennonite in their later years. She cherished the connections with people she made through Maple Breezes, Sewing Circle, Small Group, Food Pack and Marriage Encounter. Surviving are 4 children; Nathan James (Sherilyn Ann Stoltzfus) of Gap, Michael Omar (Karen Joy Sauder) of White Horse, Irene Elizabeth (Edward Martin Ryan) of Durham, NC, Herman David (Farrah Fine) of Salida, CO, 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Surviving are 2 siblings, Ida Troyer of Smithville TN, and Irma Miller (John) of Walnut Hills Retirement Community, OH, and sisters-in-law Floy Lapp of Akron, PA and Tena Miller of Wilmot, OH. She was preceded in death by siblings Mabel Miller, Ada (Mose) Beachy, Abraham (Clara) Miller, Joe (Mary) Miller, John Miller, David (Fannie) Miller, and an infant Dennis.
