Obituary

Richard Gary "Dick" Cummings, 89, passed away peacefully at home on February 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Nancy Lee (Bicknell) Cummings for 65 years and the son of the late Chester and Ruth Cummings. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. He worked as a CPA and served in the United States Army.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two children: Joan, wife of Ret. Col. Joseph Leardi, of Mechanicsburg; and Robert G. Cummings of San Francisco; four grandchildren: Luke Richard Leardi, Sophia J. Cummings, Henry Paul Leardi, and Ryan J. Cummings; and four siblings: Dudley M., husband of Marilyn Cummings; Gayle C., wife of Joe Fisher (dec.); Diane G., wife of Ron Andrulonis; and Kay, wife of Bart Kuhns.

Dick lived a life defined by integrity, discipline, faith, and an enduring love of family and community. A 1954 graduate of Oxford Area High School, he distinguished himself early as an extraordinary athlete. A standout shortstop, he earned a spot on the varsity baseball team as a seventh grader and also excelled in soccer. He was inducted into the Oxford Area High School Hall of Fame in 2015.

Following graduation, Dick proudly served his country in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany, he continued to shine on the field, earning a place on the All-Europe Army Softball Team, blending his patriotism with his lifelong passion for sport.

Dick earned his CPA and served as Managing Partner at Dorwart, Andrew and Company in Lancaster, PA. His steady leadership, sharp intellect, and unwavering ethical standards earned him deep respect.

Athletics remained a cornerstone of Dick's life. He coached Little League baseball for many years, mentoring and inspiring young athletes. In 1975, he led the Strasburg Junior Midgets to both the Mount Joy and New Era Championships. Later, Dick returned to competitive play, belting 47 home runs in the Zinn's Park League. He could drive a golf ball 300 yards, a testament to his strength, technique, and competitive spirit.

He faithfully served as treasurer for the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, Lancaster Lions Club, Strasburg Jaycees, and Meadia Heights Golf Club, generously offering his time, financial acumen, and steady guidance. His faith and service were central to who he was.

Above all, Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He led by example—through hard work, humility, kindness, and quiet strength. His family was his greatest pride, and nothing brought him more joy than supporting and celebrating their lives. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that you share a memory here, or send a card with a memory to Nancy.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. There will be an opportunity at the service for anyone who wants to share a memory of Dick. The family thanks everyone in advance for their kind words shared.
