Richard A. Abel, 94, of Quarryville, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at St. Anne's Retirement Community.He was the husband of the late Virginia Flick Abel who died in January 2017. Dick was born in Lancaster, PA, a son of the late Frank M and Josephine Kirchner Abel.
Dick was the owner of his business, Abel Brothers in Quarryville.He started the business in 1948. He could still be seen working at the business at age 90.
He was a graduate of Franklin and Marshall Academy, Lancaster. He had served on the Board of Directors for Farmers First Bank for over 30 years.Dick was a member of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge and the Octoraro Hunting Club.He had served during WWII in the US Navy aboard the USS Pillsbury. He was a faithful member of St Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Quarryville.
He is survived by 5 children, Constance Peiffer (Kent), Elizabethtown, PA, Richard Abel, Jr. (Christine), Quarryville, PA, Susan Parker (Sam), Wachapreaque, VA, Robert Abel (Julie), Enola, PA, John Abel, Hummelstown, PA, 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and a sister Teresa Tymon, Lancaster.He was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Fuhrmann. Dick was pre-deceased by sisters Joanne Costello, Rosemary Horn, Claire Renk, Betty Jo Pointer and a brother, Frank Abel.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial memorial service at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 955 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville on Friday, September 21, 2018, at 11:00 AM with Reverend Mark Speitel as celebrant. Friends may visit with family on Friday prior to the Mass from 10-11:00 AM at the church, and following the Mass.Interment will be private in St Catherine of Siena Catholic Cemetery.
