Born and raised in Delaware County, she was the daughter of the late James and Janet (Krause) Prendergast. She was married to Mark V. Francis for 44 years.
Sue's passion was helping students develop a love of reading and become life long readers and learners. She spent most of her professional life with the Conestoga Valley School District as a teacher, reading specialist, and reading coordinator. She was a graduate of Millersville University and earned a master's degree from Penn State University. Following retirement, she taught graduate classes at Eastern Mennonite University, Lancaster Campus.
Sue served as president of both the Lancaster Lebanon Reading Council and the Keystone State Reading Association. She received the Celebrate Literacy Award from both organizations for promoting literacy throughout the state. She served on committees of the International Reading Association as well as those of the local and state organizations.
Sue was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. She had served as a deacon and elder and was a member of the Mary Circle of the Women's Association.
In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by her son David, husband of Jennifer (Schlueter) of Barnegat, New Jersey, and daughter Katy, wife of Chad Moline of Lititz. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Madison and Chase Moline. She is also survived by her sister Carolyn Ryan (James) of Wilmington, Delaware and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael and Jackie Francis of Naples, Florida.
