Melvin D. Wright passed away April 11, 2022, in Quarryville, PA after an extended illness. He was born October 2, 1934 in Newark, DE to Elbert J. and Frances M. Davis Wright. He graduated from Newark High School in 1952 and upon graduation went to work for Avon Products where he worked for 43 years with perfect attendance. He retired in 1995. He enjoyed going to auctions, gardening, woodworking, and traveling in his spare time. He will be remembered for his smile, laugh, strong work ethic, and his willingness to help others. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve, serving during the Vietnam Era. He served as both a deacon and elder at Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Newark, where he was a member for over 50 years. When he moved to the Quarryville Presbyterian Community in 2007, he then became a member of Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church in Quarryville. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sally Jo Effinger Wright, brother Raymond J. (Diane) Wright, children Kenneth M. (Bonnie) Wright, Kathryn M. Wargo; grandchildren K. Mark (Kara) Wright, Kevin M. (Wendy) Wargo, Lauren F. (Josh) Reif, Kristen E. (Jordan) Bennington as well as seven great-grandchildren (Calvin, Claire, Caleb Wright; Sam, Abby Reif; Matthew, Jonathan Wargo). Melvin's patriot ancestor, Nehemiah Davis, made him eligible to be a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. The family wishes to thank the staff at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community for the love and care provided to Melvin during the past five years.
Services will be held at the Reynolds & Shivery Funeral Home, 144 E. State Street, Quarryville, PA on Friday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be held following the service at the New London Presbyterian Cemetery, New London. PA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either Providence Christian School , 4847 Murphy Mill Road, Dothan, AL 36303 or PCA's Discipleship Ministries , 1700 N. Brown Road, Suite 102, Lawrenceville, GA 30043. Arrangements entrusted to Reynolds & Shivery Funeral Home, Inc. of Quarryville.
