Whiteside, Sr.
July 11, 1936 – January 23, 2024
John T. Whiteside, Sr. age 87, formerly of Christiana, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was the husband of the late Shirley A. Mendenhall Whiteside for 54 years before her passing on June 24, 2011. Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Norman and Esther Berkey Whiteside. He was a member of the former Colerain Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and helped manage the cemetery. He was a Post Master and a Grand Master for the former Washington Lodge #156. John honorably served in the United States Air Force and then worked for Lukens Steel for over 40 years. He was a life member of the Bart Township Fire Company Station 51. In his free time, he loved flying, hunting, reading, and following sports. Surviving are 2 children; Bob, husband of Evelyn Hall Whiteside of Norristown, Diane, wife of Curt Woerth II of Quarryville, 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a brother; Harry "Dutch," husband of the late Carol Whiteside of Paradise. He was preceded in death by a son, John T. Whiteside, Jr., a grandson, Christopher Whiteside, and a brother, Norman, late husband of the late Pat Whiteside. A funeral service will take place at Reynolds & Shivery Funeral Home, 144 East State Street, Quarryville, on Thursday, January 25th at 11 a.m. with a viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Blake Deibler will be officiating. Interment will be in the Colerain Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's honor to the Bart Township Fire Company, P.O. Box 72, Bart, PA 17503.
