Galen W.
Smoker
April 25, 1951 – November 5, 2025
Galen Wayne Smoker, 74, of Cochranville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Lancaster General Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Verna (Smucker) Smoker, his wife of 50 years. Together they built a strong and loving family rooted in faith and hard work. Born in Andrews Bridge to the late Sylvan K. and Elsie K. (Yoder) Smoker, Galen grew up with a love for people and a heart to serve. As a teenager, he worked for Aaron Kauffman on the farm, and after marrying Verna, he joined his father-in-law at Sam S. Smucker and Sons. In 1979, he founded Diversified Roofing, which he owned and operated for many years. Later, he worked in sales for Russellville Hoop Buildings and enjoyed providing transportation for the Amish community. Galen's faith guided every part of his life. In his early years he was an integral part of the founding of Victory Chapel, where he led worship with his deep bass voice, later attending Worship Center and most recently, Freedom Life Church. He loved praising God, giving generously to others, and serving whenever needed. He enjoyed simple things—playing cards, traveling to Florida, taking back road drives with Verna as his copilot, riding his Kubota with his grandchildren, and cheering them on at their games. He had a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and loved. Galen was genuinely interested in others, whether over a cup of coffee, a friendly chat, or a shared laugh. Galen is deeply loved and will be forever missed by his wife Verna; four children: Carmela, wife of Matt Hershey of Cochranville, Randall Wayne Smoker of Gordonville, Sondra Smoker of Tampa, FL, and Doug, husband of Jessie Steadman Smoker of Lancaster; and six grandchildren: Jacob, husband of Carly Rose Hershey, Eli Hershey, Maxwell Wayne Hershey, Trevor Smoker, Macie Smoker, and Taylor Wayne Smoker. He is also survived by eight siblings: David (Judy High) Smoker, Glenda (James) Brubaker, Nathanael (Donna Taylor) Smoker, Timothy (Sandra Burkhart) Smoker, Karen (Daniel) Brooks, Charity (Joseph) Watson, John (Brenda Jennings) Smoker, and Grace (Graham) Muir. He was preceded in death by his sister Susan (the late wife of Richard Ressler, husband of Lavina Ressler). Galen lived a full and generous life— a man of strong faith, steadfast love, a heart for people, and a deep voice that filled a room. His legacy of love, kindness, and faith will live on in all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, pay it forward and give to someone in need.
There will be a viewing at the Worship Center, 2384 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, on Wednesday, November 12th for 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be at the Worship Center on Thursday at 10 a.m.
