Charles "Jack" Pinkerton, Jr.

Charles (Jack) Walter Pinkerton, Jr., age 80, formerly of Bradford Woods, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Concordia at Rebecca Residence in Pittsburgh, PA. Charles was the son of Florence and Charles Walter (Sr.) Pinkerton. He was born in Coatesville, PA and raised in Parkesburg, PA. Charles graduated from Octorara High School in Atglen, PA, where he played baseball and basketball. He attended Pennsylvania State University where he was a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and earned a B.S. in Business Administration (Industrial Management).
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen Walter Pinkerton. He is survived by his son Charley, daughter-in-law Janette Burton and grandson Jack of Boulder, CO. In addition, he is survived by many brother- and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews from the Walter family.
Charles had a long, successful career as a salesman in the steel industry. He followed in his father's footsteps by working at Lukens Steel. He remained at Lukens through their acquisition by Bethlehem Steel and spent the end of his career at New Ken Steel. His work moved the family from Pennsylvania to Chicago, Ohio and Buffalo before settling in Pittsburgh. Outside of work, he enjoyed golf, traveling annually to Myrtle Beach to play, and skiing, which provided many memorable trips to Vermont and Colorado. Charles was also an accomplished high school basketball referee.
In retirement, he and wife Gretchen enjoyed many of Pittsburgh's cultural offerings, including the Speaker Series, Symphony and Steelers games. He volunteered at North Country Meals on Wheels where he served as both a driver and treasurer. His greatest joy was spending time with Gretchen in their beautiful Bradford Woods home, surrounded by trees, wildlife, wonderful neighbors and cats, Sidney and Samantha.
A gathering to celebrate Charles' life will be announced at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to North Country Meals on Wheels or the Butler County Humane Society.
