Obituary

Catharine Elizabeth Scheffel King's spirit eagerly went home to meet her Saviour face to face when her body died on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at the age of 90, 50 years after her first cancer diagnosis.  She was also anxious to be reunited with her husband of over 61 years, the late Joseph S. King who died January 31, 2019.  Born in Somerset County, she was the daughter of the late Lee Harry and Annie Miller Eichorn Scheffel.

She came to Chester County to teach school at what is today West Fallowfield Christian School in Atglen.  Her love of teaching continued into many years of children's ministry, traveling with her daughters as the King's Kids Evangelistic Team to various camps and churches, and developing Children's Church in her home church of Victory Chapel, today Freedom Life, and later at Maple Grove Mennonite.  As a member of Maple Grove, she also taught Sunday School and was secretary of the church sewing circle.  Her love of children and teaching them about Jesus inspired many, including her daughters.

She and her husband worked together on their dairy farm when they were raising their family and later Cathy was hired at Malcom Wright Buick-Olds, Thorndale, as the first woman car salesperson in the area.  She retired from Robert's Automall, Downingtown, after 20 successful years selling automobiles.  Whatever endeavor Cathy undertook, she did it with gusto and with the full devotion and support of her husband.

She is survived by her children: Gwendolyn and Dain Null of Cochranville, Yvonne and Zachary Mullins of Midlothian, VA, Joseph Jr. and Kimberly Haught King, Wanda and Douglas Lapp, both of Cochranville, Jewell and Steven Shivery of Christiana, Theresa and David Foltz of Downingtown, 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren with 3 more on the way, 2 brothers: John (Ruth) and Paul (Dorothy) Scheffel, and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by 4 great-grandchildren and her siblings: Jonas, David and Clarence Scheffel, Alvin Eichorn, Sara Mast, Vera and Mary Beitzel.

Funeral service will be at Maple Grove Mennonite Church, 549 Swan Road, Atglen, on Friday, August 23rd at 11 a.m. with Pastors Mike Lusby and Mike Clemmer officiating.  There will be a viewing at the church on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service.  Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Cathy's memory to MCC, PO Box 500, Akron, PA 17501 or to MDS, 583 Airport Road, Lititz, PA 17543.
