Betty K.
Griffith
June 29, 1925 – October 24, 2023
Betty K. Griffith, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at Willow Valley Retirement Community where she resided for the past 23 years. Betty was married for 54 years to Clair Krantz Griffith who passed away in 2001.
Betty was born in Drumore Township, on June 29, 1925 to the late Harry E and Emma Pfautz Kreider. After graduating from Quarryville High School, she worked for Eastern States and Howard E Groff in Quarryville. Upon her marriage to Clair on May 17, 1947 she worked on their dairy farm in Mechanic Grove. In the early 1960s she took her first college course at Millersville University and graduated in 1965. For the next 22 years she taught second grade at Smoketown Elementary in the Conestoga Valley school system.
Betty was an excellent cook and baker and was well known for her fancy hors d'oeuvres. As a lifelong member of the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren she was very active in the ladies auxiliary and could be seen working in the kitchen at all church events. She sang in the senior choir plus was a regular at the Wednesday morning bible study group. She was a charter member of the farm women society #21 in Quarryville.
As a young adult, she was a very active basketball player and then later turned to bowling at Strasburg and golfing at Tanglewood and various other courses. Betty was the only person on the face of the earth that truly loved the North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke men's basketball team. To say 1980 and 2008 were very good sports years for Betty is an understatement, as her beloved Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series. However, 1980 was not all good, as Shaub's Shoes store started selling other items and eventually moved north to Lititz. And then the unthinkable happened in 2008 when Doneckers in Ephrata closed its doors.
Surviving is her son Gordon (Laura) Lancaster Pennsylvania, grandsons Aaron (Judith Weismann) Utrecht The Netherlands, and Adam (Susan Mcdowell) Asheville, NC. Also the Great grandchildren, Louisa, David, Oskar, and Vincent in Europe and Simon and Mia in North Carolina. Additionally, she is survived by her dear brother-in-law, John Hagen and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her favorite daughter, Gail Marie Wertz who died in 2003, and 7 siblings: Clyde, Leon, Everett, Stanley Kreider, Marie Heller, Sara Bucher Koser, and Bonnie Hagen.
For those who wish to honor Betty's memory, the family would ask you to send a donation in her name to your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren on November 24th. Family and friends will be received at 10am prior to the 11am service.
