Arne Walter Johnsen, age 88, of Quarryville, PA went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was born in Brooklyn New York in 1925 to the late Petter August and Nancy Haabesland Johnsen.
Arne was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Ruth Mathisen Johnsen.
Arne served his country in the US Navy as a seaman 1st class, aboard the U.S.S. Miami during WWII. He worked for the telephone company in New York, eventually retiring from Siemens in 1989. Arne, best known as "Walter", was an active member of 66th Street Evangelical Free Church in Brooklyn, New York and Cresskill Evangelical Free Church in New Jersey where he served for many years in Boys Brigade, as a Deacon and Elder.
After retiring to Whiting, NJ, Walter and wife Ruth relocated to Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community where he enjoyed Hymn Sing and performing in the choir.
Arne was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather.He is survived by his children Ruth Ann Nilsen of Norridgewock, ME, Bruce Walter (Janet Nilsen) Johnsen of Cornwall, PA, Holly Lynn (Victor) Vaccaro of Bergenfield, NJ, Timothy Allen (Kathie Rupp) Johnsen of Lake Placid, NY;five grandchildren, Victoria Nilsen of Toano, VA, Susan Nilsen of Williamsburg, VA, Krysti Nilsen Dabrowski of Little Rock, AR, Allison Johnsen Cummings of Enid, OK, Karin Johnsen Guttzeit of Fairlawn, NJ; 6 great grandchildren; a brother William Johnsen of River Edge, NJ; and two sisters Signe Roberts of Arvado, CO, and Ruth Tonnesen of Warwick, NY.
Funeral services will be held at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Ellingsworth Auditorium, 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 2:00PM with Chaplain Stephen L. Phillips officiating. A visitation will be held from 1:00PM until the time of service in the Williamsburg Room. Interment will be in Quarryville Cemetery.
