Arlene R. Breuninger, 93, formerly of Cochranville, PA died Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community where she resided since January 2009.
Arlene was the widow of Charles W. Breuninger who died July 11, 1997.She was born in Paradise, PA, a daughter of the late Howard and Anna Buckwalter Reath.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rising Sun, MD, and Bethany Orthodox Presbyterian Church of Nottingham, PA where she founded the church library and served as the librarian. She also served as the head of the 50th and 60th anniversary committee, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Missionary and Prayer Band.
Active in her community, she was the coordinator for the Released Time Program and a member of the Research Club, both in Oxford. Arlene also served as docent for Brandywine Battlefield State Park and the Robert Fulton House.
A graduate of Millersville State Teacher's College, Arlene was a career school teacher, teaching first in several Amish and one room school houses in Lancaster County.She then taught 1st grade in the Oxford Area School District for over 20 years until her retirement.
Arlene enjoyed card club, picking cherries with her grandchildren, college sports, baseball, and a variety of crafts including sewing, cross stitch, ceramics and painting.
Surviving Arlene are two children, Charles L. (Katherine) Breuninger of New London, PA, Elizabeth A. (James) Prettyman of Oxford; and three grandchildren.Arlene was preceded in death by a son Carl and a granddaughter Becky Prettyman.
Funeral services will be held at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Ellingsworth Auditorium, 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 11:00Am with Pastor Tom Martin officiating.Interment will follow in Strasburg Cemetery.A viewing will be held from 10:00AM until the time of service.
